Maca (Lepidium Meyenii)

Lepidium meyenii (Maca) is a Brassicaceae that grows exclusively over 3500 m in the Central Peruvian Andes. The hipocotil was wide used traditionally, because medicinal properties. Bernabe Cobo was the first in report maca properties related to fertility (Cobo, 1956).

Different varieties have been described according the colour of the hypocotyls (Tello et al 1992; Yllescas et al 1994), differing in their phytochemical composition and properties (Yllescas et al 1994; Gonzales et al 2005; Gasco et al 2007).

Many cruciferas, including maca, synthesize glucosinolates (Fahey et al., 2001) although this concentration could vary depending on the specie, even in the same specie, depending of age and behavior factors under it grows (Ciska et al., 2000) that could explain the differences between varieties of maca in their different biological effects.

A lot studies have demonstrated that maca improve male reproductive parameters properties (Gonzales et al 2001a; Gonzales et al 2001b; Gonzales et al 2003b; Gonzales et al 2004; Cicero et al 2001; Chung et al 2005; Rubio et al 2006), the same have demonstrated a positive effect on sexual function in rats and humans (Zheng et al 2000; Gonzales et al 2003a; Lentz et al 2007).

Different varieties of maca have been described according to the color of the hypocotyls (Tello et al 1992; Yllescas et al 1994). The most frequent studied have been red, black and yellow varieties (Fig. 5) (Gonzales et al 2005; Gonzales et al 2006a, Gasco et al 2007), the difference between them is their phitochemical constitution and biological activity (Gonzales et al 2005; Gonzales et al 2006a, Gasco et al 2007).
